Curriculum Vitae Andrew Hawes
Andrew is considered a mid-career artist whose paintings have been exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions since 2003, including Perth Concert Hall solo exhibition in 2009/10. His art education has included intensive studies in New York and London and his work is held in both public and private collections in Australia and overseas. Recent purchasers of note have included The City of Stirling, Mr Joe and Mrs Lisa Scaffidi (Lord Mayor of Perth) and Mike & Eileen Riley USA.
Creative Structure
The direction of Andrew’s work is strongly influenced by aspects dominant in Orthodox Byzantine Iconography. Andrew is particularly interested in the juxtaposition of Byzantine technique and style developed in Iconography alongside classical modernist themes seen in the abstract work of Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and others, popularized in the nineteen twenties.
Though many centuries separate these two distinctly different styles, there are complementary similarities on close inspection and study of the fine detail. Andrew has also travelled extensively overseas, for both professional development and personal enjoyment, including; U.S.A., New Zealand, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and many European Countries.
Andrew believes his travel experience has saturated his senses with a broad cross section of diverse and fascinating images. Traditional art and architectural detail continues to impact on his style. In many of his paintings he attempts to reinterpret abstracts of images that he has enjoyed or found attractive, even if it relates to just a minute piece of a certain shade of blue.
His philosophy is to be satisfied with and enjoy each individual painting that he creates, resulting in pieces of art that hopefully, other people will continue to enjoy.
Andrew’s distinctive style has developed as a result of pursuing compositions, which lie on the cusp of reality and abstract. His goal is to create bold and entertaining paintings, which are pleasing to the eye, uplifting and whimsical by their nature, with carefully balanced colour and image stimulating the interest and curiosity of the viewer.
Representation
Andrew’s paintings are retailed via selected annual exhibitions and on-going by several galleries, including Finishing Touch Fremantle and Studio 281 Maylands. His East Perth Studio is open by appointment for commissions. Andrew’s work is held in both public and private collections in Australia and overseas.
